Leaf Blend Lettuce

5 Key Steps to Grow Lettuce

  • Sow Seeds & Soil Prep: Lettuce grows best in loose, well-draining soil. Directly sow seeds outdoors in early spring or fall, spacing them lightly in rows. If starting indoors, use a seed-starting mix and plant seeds 1/4 inch deep.

  • Spacing & Thinning: Thin seedlings to give them space to mature—about 6-12 inches apart, depending on the variety. This will ensure proper airflow and prevent crowding.

  • Light & Temperature: Lettuce prefers cool weather (60-70°F / 15-21°C) and needs 6-8 hours of light. Partial shade can help prevent bolting (when lettuce turns bitter and flowers) during hotter weather.

  • Water Consistently: Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Lettuce has shallow roots and needs regular watering, especially in dry spells, for tender, crisp leaves.

  • Harvest: Harvest leaf lettuce by picking the outer leaves when they are large enough to use, leaving the center to grow for future harvests. For head varieties, cut at the base when mature.

Tips for Success

  • Plant Successively: Plant new seeds every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
  • Shade in Heat: Provide some shade during hot weather to prevent the lettuce from bolting too quickly.
